1961
Born in Model Town, Delhi
Born on 15 May 1961 to Lt. Lala Ram Bilas Gupta, a freedom fighter, early member of the RSS and well-known social worker of Delhi, she grew up with a deep grounding in service and Indian moral values.
1977
Joined the ABVP, at sixteen
Already grounded in the Rashtriya Sewika Samiti since childhood, she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at just sixteen. It was the beginning of a public life that continues to this day.
1983–84
Joint Secretary, Delhi University Students' Union
An active member of the ABVP at Hindu College, she was elected Joint Secretary of DUSU and travelled to Assam to lead a protest against illegal migration and infiltration.
1980s
Advocate, Delhi High Court
After earning her law degree from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, she built a successful legal practice, and began offering free legal counselling to women in need.
1993–95
General Secretary, then Vice President, BJP Mahila Morcha (Delhi)
Appointed General Secretary of the party's women's wing in Delhi in 1993 and elevated to Vice President in 1995, she mobilised women across the city for social and civic initiatives.
1997
Elected Municipal Councillor, Model Town
In her first term as councillor she became Deputy Chairperson of the MCD Standing Committee, where she formulated the hand-rickshaw puller policy.
1998
First Woman Deputy Mayor of Delhi
Elevated to Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the first woman ever to hold the post. She led the formation of the Women and Children Welfare Society and initiated Delhi's multi-level underground parking.
1999
Chairman, Education Committee
For the first time, children in MCD primary schools were given tables and chairs. With the introduction of English as a subject and much more, the corporation's schools rose to stand alongside private ones, shaping the education of lakhs of students to this day.
2007
Councillor, Kohat Enclave
Elected for a second stint as municipal councillor, continuing her grassroots work in north-west Delhi.
2010–12
Chairman, Appointments Committee
Framed policies to improve the efficiency and accountability of MCD employees.
2012
Mayor of Delhi
Elected unopposed on 30 April 2012 as the first Mayor of the newly created North Delhi Municipal Corporation (the MCD had been trifurcated that year, and was re-unified in 2022) after winning the Sawan Park ward as a three-time councillor. Her fourth election, and her fourth win. In her year as Mayor, Delhi's first Mahila Haat was completed at Asaf Ali Road, a market of 55 stalls dedicated to women artisans. The corporation's own medical college, promised by her on the day she took office, was established at Hindu Rao Hospital, making the North corporation only the third municipal body in India, after Mumbai and Ahmedabad, to run its own medical college.
2013
Leader of the House, North DMC
Continued to guide the corporation as Leader of the House, taking up citizens' causes from soaring power tariffs to civic amenities.
Present
Member, National Executive, BJP
A member of the BJP's National Executive Committee, she remains an active social worker, associated with numerous NGOs working for the upliftment of women.
