Meera gets prized post in north Delhi

Mira Aggarwal felicitated by Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta and Deputy Mayor Azad Singh in the North DMC house after her election as Mayor
BJP councillors congratulate the new Mayor, the scene Deccan Herald described.

Deccan Herald's report caught the theatre of the moment better than any other: after every member of the new House had taken the oath, it fell to the outgoing Mayor of the undivided MCD, Prof. Rajni Abbi, to announce her successor. “Since there is no other nomination for the mayor’s post apart from Aggarwal’s, this House unanimously elects her,” Abbi declared, inviting her to the chair as BJP councillors rose from their seats in congratulation.

The election had become unanimous after the BSP’s Satpal Singh withdrew his nomination; the Deputy Mayorship went unopposed to Master Azad Singh, younger brother of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, and a six-member Standing Committee was elected in what the paper called a ‘friendly’ atmosphere.

The new Mayor’s first words to the House were about delivery and money. People had sent the BJP back because it had delivered last time, she said, and there was no time to waste, but the new corporation’s resources were thin, and she pressed the Delhi government for a bailout package rather than a loan.

People have great expectations from us. We have to start delivering without wasting time. People have sent us back to House because we had delivered the last time.
