Meera Aggarwal is first Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi

On 30 April 2012, India Today reported that the newly trifurcated Municipal Corporation of Delhi had got its very first Mayor: the BJP's Mira Aggarwal, elected unopposed as the head of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. A three-time councillor and law graduate elected from the Sawan Park ward, she was sworn in at the corporation's Civic Centre headquarters, where her party colleague Azad Singh took oath as Deputy Mayor.

The report, filed by the Mail Today Bureau, noted that her election came barely ten days after the tenure of the representatives elected to the undivided MCD in 2007 had ended on 22 April, making the North corporation the first of Delhi's three new civic bodies to be fully constituted; the East and South corporations elected their mayors over the following two days.

Freshly sworn in, the new Mayor announced that work on a medical college at Narela would begin within six months, and promised to bring public utilities on a par with international standards, with particular attention to the district's greenery and sanitation. She described the corporation's inherited financial condition as "unfortunate" and demanded that the new civic body be allowed to start with a clean slate rather than inherit debts.
