BJP's Azad Singh elected North Delhi Mayor

Her mayoralty ended the way it had begun, inside the House, and reported by PTI. On 8 April 2013, having completed the year-long tenure the law allowed, Mira Aggarwal stepped down as Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and, as presiding officer, conducted the election of her successor: Azad Singh, the Mundka councillor and former teacher who had served the year as her own Deputy Mayor, elected unopposed.

The report caught the House's rough humour too: her outgoing speech was interrupted by Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Goyal, who insisted the presiding officer should simply get on with the election, “There is no need to make speeches,” he said, after which she began the proceedings that put Singh in the chair.

The outgoing Mayor was generous about the man taking over, praising his ability to carry everyone with him, while the new Mayor promised no house tax in rural areas, two thousand new sweepers for unauthorised colonies, and continued focus on parking, sanitation and school uniforms. BJP councillor Poornima Vidyarthi was elected Deputy Mayor unopposed, and India TV’s photograph of the day shows Mira Aggarwal herself, bouquets in hand, greeting her successor.
