Ever since wrestler Sushil Kumar won silver at the London Olympics on 12 August 2012, The Hindu reported, Delhi's three municipal corporations had been planning a grand felicitation for their pehelwan, and after some early jostling over which civic body would host it, the honour was done jointly, at a function organised by all three corporations at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium on 24 September.

The Hindu's photograph of the evening, by S. Subramanium, showed the wrestler being felicitated by North Delhi Mayor Mira Aggarwal alongside East Delhi Mayor Annapurna Mishra. The photograph on this page, from the Mayor's own album, records the same moment.

As appreciation for bringing honour to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on the world stage (Kumar completed his primary education in an MCD school) the corporations presented a cheque of Rs 51 lakh and exempted one residential property in his name from property tax for life. The wrestler thanked the corporations and advised students to always respect their parents, teachers and elders, encouraging them to take up sport seriously enough to make it a career. Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta hailed him as the "Lion of Delhi" and "Prince of Delhi", hoping future generations would draw inspiration from him.
