Meera Aggarwal elected North Delhi Mayor

Mira Aggarwal felicitated by Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta and Deputy Mayor Azad Singh in the North DMC house after her election as Mayor — Felicitated in the House after the unopposed election the Tribune reported.

In its Delhi edition of 1 May 2012, the Tribune News Service reported that Mira Aggarwal had been elected the first Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, one of the three new civic agencies created by the trifurcation of the erstwhile MCD. The election was unopposed: the BSP had filed a nomination but its candidate withdrew, and the Congress chose not to field anyone.

The report introduced the new Mayor as the 50-year-old, law-educated councillor from Sawan Park ward, serving her third term for the BJP. Azad Singh, the party's councillor from Mundka, was elected Deputy Mayor, likewise unopposed, and all the newly elected councillors of the corporation were sworn in the same day.

The Tribune also recorded the corporation's first Standing Committee, elected alongside: Yogender Chandolia, V. P. Pandey, Surinder Kaur and Hoor Banu of the BJP, and Mukesh Goel and Prithvi Singh Rathore of the Congress.
